News just out that the Greek Government has announced a ban on the use of animals in circuses and in similar performances.

This would not only bring an end to all animal circuses in Greece, but also has the potential to ban all animal performances in zoos and dolphinaria too.

We don’t have all the details yet, but if confirmed, this is absolutely fantastic news!

Information Technology is a compulsory subject for the senior students at the Rathambalagama School. They have a basic school computer lab and an instructor, but the students are a bit reluctant to take the classes regularly; the subject is too technical for them, they say, and of course communication with the machines has to be in English.

Born Free conducted a 2-day IT orientation workshop in mid January for students of the Grades 9, 10, and 11 (14-17yrs). Sixty-seven students participated and two resource persons from Colombo facilitated the interactive yet informative sessions. The main objective of the workshop was to motivate the students towards using A-B-C of essential information technology.

By the end of the second day, the students had mastered the primary tools and they individually made a PowerPoint presentation on Born Free work in Rathambalagama, under the supervision of the resource persons.

‘Using computer software is fun, and now we realize how useful the tool in our school studies’, said a 9th Grader after completing the workshop. ‘The workshop made the kids demanding and I struggle to meet them with the limited resources at the School computer lab’ says the happy, but slightly worried IT instructor!
