Following a setback in August, when both dolphins became ill, successful treatment means the project has once again started to move forward at a steady pace and Tom and Misha have regained condition and fitness.  This is thanks to the dedicated team who are working with the dolphins seven days a week and who, under the guidance of Jeff Foster, will see the dolphins through the next crucial stages of their rehabilitation process including the vital transfer to live fish feeding.  This gradual change to the feeding regime is being carefully monitored but all signs are positive so far and everyone involved believes that the dolphins will successfully adapt to this necessary survival skill when it is fully introduced.

The project’s modified centre of operations, which has been provided by the Gokova Sailing Club, offers a more protected environment and the calmer waters will make the process easier for the team.

The Back to the Blue team consists of four people; Jeff Foster, Mike Partica, Amy Souster and Derya Yildirim.  Together they are nurturing the dolphins through the rehab process, a task that involves long days and constant adaptation to the dolphins’ needs and progress.  Born Free Foundation has been extremely lucky to secure their services and dedication.  In addition, we remain grateful to the volunteers from British Divers Marine Life Rescue who provide continued and practical help.

Our thanks also go to John Knight, the project’s lead veterinary consultant, and to Stephen McCulloch and Robin Friday for their ongoing support and advice.  In addition Dolphin Angels continue to offer support and encouragement to the project, not losing site of the two dolphins they helped rescue from life in a concrete tank.
